The Building/Planning Zoning Department is dedicated to consistently protecting the general public by providing structural and life safety through the enforcement of Ordinances and Building Codes. These include:

• Building regulations
• Floodplain administration
• Addressing
• Zoning administration and enforcement

Permit Requests

Permits are needed for new buildings and structures, remodels where the structure of a building is involved, basement finish work, septic systems, and mechanical work. If you are not sure if the work you are doing requires a permit, please call 701-221-3727.

Permit applications are available in PDF format and available on line. Completed permit applications can be dropped off at 221 N. 5th Street. Permits for Mechanical and Plumbing work can be requested by calling your information to 701-221-3727.

Inspection Requests

Inspections are scheduled in a two-hour block format, with the first inspection starting at 10:00 am. Inspections called in after 4:00 pm will be scheduled for the next day. Inspectors and their inspection times fill up fast. It is important to call as soon as you need an inspection.
